Given a break by a missed field goal, Romo scrambled for a first down, then completed seven straight passes, the last a 10-yarder to Patrick Crayton for a touchdown with 2:41 left that gave the Dallas Cowboys a 7-6 victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday and preserved their spot atop the NFC East.

"To lose it like that in the end in a hostile situation, it's just so hard," Washington coach Jim Zorn said. "Yet, we hung in there. I believe this is a special team of players who will not just chuck things in being 3-7. ... We're going to look at our roster, patch it up and go again."

The Giants jumped out to a 17-0 first-half lead and were never threatened.

Washington, which trailed all game, drew within 23-17 with 1:30 to play on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Chris Cooley. Steve Smith recovered the onside kick, and New York ran out the clock.

The Redskins also got an 8-yard touchdown run from punter Hunter Smith on a fake field goal late in the first half and a 27-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham in the third quarter.

Warren Sapp presented the game ball to an emotional Norv Turner, who got to leave on time and without a second thought to the whim of Dan Snyder.

Turner was victorious in his return to FedEx Field, leading his Oakland Raiders to a 16-13 victory against the Washington Redskins, coming out on the winning side of the type of cliffhanger that never seemed to go his way when he was the head coach in the nation's capital for seven years.

The Redskins (5-5) have seen six games decided by three points or fewer. They have lost five of their past seven and fell two games behind the NFC East leaders. They also dropped to 4-1 at home and -- after losing three more fumbles -- have a terrible minus-13 turnover differential.

"We lost it; we've got to deal with it," linebacker LaVar Arrington said. "This team has got to cross over from being close to winning games to understanding that we can win those games."

Campbell appeared out of sorts with Zorn's West Coast attack in a 16-7 loss to the Giants, but he went 24-for-36 with no interceptions against the Saints. He completed his last eight passes as the Redskins (1-1) overcame a nine-point deficit with two touchdowns in the final 6½ minutes.

The big play came with 3:29 left and the Redskins trailing 24-22. Campbell avoided the rush, stepped forward and hit Moss in stride, the receiver one step ahead of rookie cornerback Tracy Porter. Zorn had chided Campbell for failing to make a similar play against the Giants, costing the team a potential touchdown.

The Saints committed three turnovers, and all landed in the hands of seventh-round draft pick Chris Horton. Horton said he "just started sweating" with nerves when he woke up Sunday morning and learned he would be making his first start because Reed Doughty was sick. Horton recovered a fumble and caught two tipped interceptions, the last one ending the Saints' final drive with 2:59 to play.

DeSean Jackson scored on a 67-yard run and a 57-yard reception, both in the first half. His night might have been perfect if his tender right ankle hadn't messed up his touchdown tap dance.

The news was bad all around for the Redskins (2-5), who got no discernible boost from Sherm Lewis' debut as a play caller and lost Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley to a broken right ankle. The offensive line is already a mess without Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas, and the team still hasn't scored more than 17 points in a game this season.

The victory gave the Cowboys a season split against their NFC East rival and improved their record to 6-4, tied with the Redskins and a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles. The threesome can virtually give up on catching the division-leading New York Giants (9-1), putting them into what promises to be a tight battle for wild-card berths over the final six weeks of the season.

Clinton Portis, who wasn't expected to play due to a sprained knee, carried 15 times for 68 yards and went over 1,000 yards for the season for the Redskins. Jason Campbell went 22-for-34 for 162 yards with an interception and a touchdown -- a 2-yard pass to fullback Mike Sellers on Washington's opening drive.

Redskins greats Darrell Green and Art Monk received their Hall of Fame rings in a pregame ceremony.

Facing overtime in the icy, bitter rain linebacker Ian Gold knocked away Mark Brunell 's 2-point conversion pass with 1:09 left to help Denver hang on to a 21-19 victory and keep the Redskins from adding yet another fantastic finish to their charmed season.

Portis ran for 103 yards on 20 carries for the Redskins and was booed pretty much every time he touched the ball.

The Redskins ran the ball effectively to take a two-touchdown lead, but the Falcons started to turn the momentum in the second quarter with a drive that included a 46-yard pass to tight end Alge Crumpler and a 16-yard touchdown pass to Crumpler.

"They played so physical," Washington defensive end Renaldo Wynn said. "We couldn't stop those guys all day."

Redskins sweep Eagles, hand rival a crucial loss in playoff race

http://blog.lehighvalleylive.com/sports_impact/2008/12/large_brownr.JPG

"I just wanted to get my hands on the ball," Brown said. "And they were there to jump on me."

The "they" were cornerback Fred Smoot and safety LaRon Landry, part of a Redskins defense that held the Eagles without a touchdown for the first time this season. As Brown leaped to catch the ball near the goal line, Smoot came underneath to keep him airborne, and Landry supplied the shove that kept the Eagles receiver out of the end zone.

The play was upheld by replay review, bringing an end to the Eagles' three-game winning streak and giving the Redskins (8-7) a consolation prize on the day they were mathematically eliminated from the postseason.

Portis began his day by ripping off a 13-yard run up the middle, looking very much like the back who once gained 218 yards and scored five touchdowns against the Chiefs the last time he played against them as a Denver Bronco in 2003. But on Sunday, he finished with 77 yards on 21 carries, adding 51 more yards with four receptions. For the fifth straight game, he was not able to get into the end zone.

For a second straight week and a second straight loss (28 - 21) on the road, the Redskins dominated the statistics, out-gaining the Chiefs in total yardage (398-274), first downs (26-18) and passing yards (297-178).
